The Star Prairie Nest Box provides a lifeline for many cavity nesters, like bluebirds.

And, in contrast to rotten tree or fence post holes, its qualities include predator protection, shading, ventilation, cleanliness, and weather resistance. It also permits convenient maintenance and monitoring — critical for breeding success of desirable species. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience, the Star Prairie Nest Box offers thoughtful solutions to help make wild bird caretaking safe, productive, easy, and enjoyable.

Locking Pin

In addition to securing the roof to the nest box, a ventilated roof-locking pin promotes airflow into the nesting cavity. Its unique design also eliminates potential for snagging nesting materials when removed.

Removable Roof

The removable roof unlocks and lifts off easily, leaving all sidewalls in place. This feature prevents eggs or hatchlings from falling out and avoids disruption of nest materials.

Entrance Choices

Real cedar and cellular PVC entrance panels come with 1-3/8" x 2-1/4" oval holes or 1-9/16" round holes. Solid panels also are available to create custom, species-specific entranceways. Plus, panels can be stored in internal channels during the off-season — eliminating the nesting cavity and preventing rodent infestation.

Lookout Perches

Perch channels are featured in key roof areas. Many birds like to assume sentry positions on upper-roof edges and peek over lower-roof edges before entering nest boxes.

Bird Friendly

The Star Prairie Nest Box offers several welcoming elements for our feathered friends. As an example, interior and exterior ladder grooves assist adults as they enter the box and fledglings as they leave their nest.

Long-Lasting Housing

The nest enclosure is constructed from 3/4-inch-thick, cellular PVC which resists damage from wood-boring insects, rodents, freeze/thaw cycles, and high humidity. It will not rot, cup, split, twist or warp. Plus, the material offers exceptional insulation and facilitates easy cleaning to help eliminate ectoparasites. See temperature performance results here.

Weather Resistance

Thoughtful, weather-resistant design and rabbeted construction help keep the nesting cavity dry and inhabitants comfortable. Features include a recessed roof pocket, wind/rain barriers, a drip ridge, an entrance drainage channel, and a sloped cavity floor.

Adjustable Mounting

The nest box features variable-height supports which slide on readily available 3/4-inch pipe (not included). This allows the nest box to be properly positioned for nesting and easily lowered to safer monitoring and maintenance heights. Pipe mounting also helps prevent predator attacks.

Because birds come in different sizes, so do our nest box entryways.

Real cedar and cellular PVC entrance panel options come with 1-3/8″ x 2-1/4″ oval holes for eastern bluebirds or 1-9/16″ round holes for mountain and western bluebirds. Solid entrance panels also can be ordered to create custom openings for many other species.

Maybe the most expensive nest boxes around…but worth every penny.

Star Prairie Nest Boxes are hand built to last a long, long time…all the while providing superior homes for cavity nesters and safer monitoring for caretakers. Much thicker and more rugged than ordinary houses, these nest enclosures are constructed from 3/4-inch-thick, cellular PVC to resist damage from wood-boring insects, rodents, freeze/thaw cycles, and high humidity. They will not rot, cup, split, twist or warp. More importantly, the material offers exceptional insulation and facilitates easy cleaning to help eliminate ectoparasites.

Did you know that eggs and hatchlings can perish in birdhouse temperatures around 105° Fahrenheit? That’s another reason we make our nest boxes from thick, light-colored, cellular PVC. Studies show that even medium-colored birdhouses can be 15° hotter than more reflective structures. When it’s 90 degrees outside, your nest box makes a difference. See our temperature performance results compared with an identically constructed wooden nest box here.
